Jewelmancy is the most common way of wielding magic in Eriaren. The jewels that are plentiful across the world hold a bewildering array of powers, leading to an infinite number of spells. But not all jewels hold magic power--those that do glow, and the strength of the glow determines how powerful the jewel is.
The easiest way to draw out a jewel's power is to tell it what to do. How this is done depends on the individual mage--some speak the name of the spell directly, and some use an incantation (with several different styles of incantations). It is also possible to combine spellsong and jewelmancy (This is commonly seen in folktales, but Brock is one such minstrel that can do this for real, although he is not proficient in jewelmancy yet)
However, the more complex your spell, the more jewels it uses up, and once you run out, you have to wait for jewels to replenish before casting again.
Jewelmancers are often identified by the jewel type they primarily use--Misty is a sapphire jewelmancer, but often uses other types. If a jewelmancer can use all the jewel types, they are called rainbow jewelmancers--but only the strongest jewelmancers reach this level
Common jewels and their effects:
Agate--Discern truth, see what is happening in another location, various psychic powers
Amber--boosts magic power
Amethyst--darkness magic, protection (Brock can conjure a shield by singing the spellsong Leishu shun ji, lei si... to an amethyst, but as his jewelmancy skill isn't very strong yet, it only lasts for a few minutes.)
Aquamarine--water magic, healing, defense
Bloodstone--a forbidden stone for a jewelmancer to use, often used in evil magic
Blue Opal--Improves memory, allows the user to tap into the memory of a person or object
Diamond--light magic
Emerald--earth magic (both rocks and crystals and plants)
Garnet--Known as "the friendship stone", jewelmancers give these stones to those they trust, allowing them to receive buffing spells from the garnet.
Hematite--healing magic
Jade--invincibility
Malachite--a ward against evil, these stones will unleash their power on their own when evil is nearby
Moonstone--healing magic, light magic
Pearl--water magic, healing, protection
Peridot--wind magic
Ruby--fire magic
Sapphire--ice magic, water magic
Sugilite--the "taming stone"--these are often used to tame Pokemon and other creatures, as well as calm angry or frightened people
Tanzanite--the "royal stone", the power in these stones can only be controlled by master jewelmancers, so very few know what this power can do.
Topaz--lightning magic
Tourmaline--the "wild stone", this jewel can behave like any of the others when sung to, making it ideal for combining jewelmancy with spellsong.

This reminds me of my world, Aielus, where all magic comes from a mystic meteorite that fell to the planet thousands of years ago. Except, in this case, the meteor's power was so great that the air is now polluted in its power, thus people had adapted to the power and are able to hold a certain amount of magic inside of them before they must recharge. Recharging happens automatically, as the power gradually but slowly refills through the people through breathing and through the pores of their skin.
